[ARCHIVED] Employee Spotlight - December 2023

How is working in animal control different than working in corrections?

It's a completely different world - I love it. I get to be outside most of the day, and I deal with all kinds of animals. I've dealt with everything from cats and dogs to possums, raccoons, hawks, owls and snakes.

People tend to think that we are dog catchers and want to pick up a dog and throw it in the pound, but that's not what this job is about.

What are the day-to-day responsibilities of your role?

We start our days at the shelter then the truck serves as our office all day long. We work closely with the emergency communications team, who dispatch calls to us.

Animal control calls range from something as simple as a dog running loose to something more complex, such as animal neglect or a hawk caught in a fence.

What's your favorite part about animal control?

I love doing livestock investigations.

For example, we had a horse neglect case earlier this year. There were nine emaciated horses, so I investigated by canvassing the area, talking to homeowners and consulting with the police. In this case, the neglect had been ongoing, so we removed and rehomed the horses.

The enjoyment for me is to go into a situation where an animal could be in dire straits and then be able to remove them from that situation and get them into a happy home and a better life. I never thought in my life I would be doing this for a living, but I love what I do.

What is your favorite animal?

I love German Shepherds! We had a call last year where a German Shepherd was abandoned after his owners had moved out of state. At first, he was fiercely protective and aggressive, but we got him out and brought him to the shelter. Little by little, he started opening up.

We took him to a training facility, and they did an amazing job with him. It changed his whole temperament, and he was rehomed. Max is such a lovely dog.
